It’s been a month since the new, range-topping Mazda CX-5 2.5 Turbo GLS AWD was previewed. The order books are open, and the estimated pricing starts from RM135k for the entry-level 2.0 GL 2WD to RM177k for the 2.5 Turbo. Included in the price is a five-year or 100,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, together with a five-year free maintenance package.

Now, the top model is powered by a 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 228 hp 5,000 rpm and 420 Nm at 2,000 rpm. A six-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission with i-Activ all-wheel drive system are standard. This model also effectively replaces the older 2.2D GLS AWD option – the 2.2D GLS 2WD is now the sole turbodiesel variant.

Judging solely on output figures, the CX-5 2.5 Turbo GLS AWD is currently the most powerful, non-premium C-segment SUV on the market, and joins a sea of turbocharged rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Peugeot 3008, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, and Proton X70. However, the CX-5 2.5 Turbo is also the thirstiest variant in the range, with an average fuel consumption of 8.2 litres per 100 km.

In terms of kit, it gets LED headlights with LED DRLs, LED fog lamps, LED combination tail lights, 19-inch dual-tone alloys shod with 225/55 profile Toyo Proxes R46 tyres, as well as keyless entry and 360-degree surround view camera. Powered tailgate is available too, as per the 2018 update.

Inside, there is a new instrument cluster much like that of the new Mazda 3, with analogue gauges on the left and right, and a fully digital seven-inch screen in the middle that displays the speedometer. All 2.0 litre models get a smaller 4.6-inch TFT LCD screen. Another revision is the climate control layout (dual-zone automatic system is standard, comes with centre rear air vents), as well as the addition of a windshield-projected heads-up display.

Elsewhere, there are leather seats (the driver’s seat gets 10-way powered adjustment with lumbar support), MZD Connect System with a seven-inch touchscreen head unit that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and electronic parking brake with auto hold function.

For safety, all variants get six airbags (front, side and curtain), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS), ABS, EBD, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Hill Launch Assist (HLA) and Isofix child seat anchors.

Additional features such as Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Smart City Brake Support Forward (SCBS F) are available from the 2.0 GLS onwards, though the 2.5 GLS 2WD gains Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Smart City Brake Support Reverse (SCBS R).

More sophisticated features like Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS) are available on the 2.2D GLS 2WD and 2.5 Turbo GLS AWD, although Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) isn’t available on any models as yet.

There are eight exterior colours to choose from, starting with Deep Crystal Blue, Sonic Silver, Meteor Grey, Jet Black, Arctic White, Soul Red Crystal, Machine Grey, and Snowflake White Pearl. The last three colours are considered premium paint, which cost an additional RM3,000 each.
